The lion, a gilded bronze statue 4 m high, stands at the top of the tower, as a symbol of the province of Messina and of strength. Immediately after the bells have chimed noon, the lion is the first statue to move. It waves the flag, moves its tail, turns its head towards the square and roars for three consecutive times.
